Linux on Chromebooks

If you have beyond R119 and your device is enroled, good luck.

If you have beyond R119, this might not be up to date. This is based on experience with a R119 device.

Installing Linux on a Chromebook is not as simple as it is on most Laptops. I'd even argue that breaking into a enroled Chromebook is harder than a Laptop literally built for prison use. At least it felt that way to me, although I lacked a proper powerbrick.

Doing this on a enroled device may well get you in trouble. If your school or employer manages your device they're likely to notice some of the things detailed here and you may get into trouble. It is theoretically possible for these types of tricks to be considered evidence of an attempt to steal the device or data. Only do this on a device you're confident you own - for example, you bought a Chromebook through a school and they never disabled the enrolment after you left.

Why?

ChromeOS. I don't think I need to say much more, if you're here, you probably agree ChromeOS' functionality is limited.

Considerations

You will need access to:

  • Another device running a desktop OS, preferably Windows or a Linux OS based on a major Distro
  • A screwdriver to disassemble your device, typically a phillips head is required
  • A MicroSD card or USB drive
  • Knowledge on how to install Linux on devices generally
  • Your devices model number and brand
  • A Charger. The more power the better
